The proposed housing and new docks is coloured red, and was laid-out by the Truro-based land surveyor Nicholas Whitley. The planned development was a not only a response to the burgeoning population and trade, but also to the significant increase in tourism, which had been on the increase since the arrival of the railway in the 1860s.
In order to highlight Falmouth as a summer holiday destination the plan also includes a chart the monthly average temperatures and compares them with those of Nottingham, and Montpelier in the south of France. Whilst Falmouth holds its own against Nottingham, it – not surprisingly – looses out to Montpelier where in August the average is a bikini-clad 26C whereas in Falmouth is a jumper-wearing 16C.
